Fiber Pays Off for Carriers, SD-WAN Not So Much, Yet

Operators are seeing enterprise revenue growth, stemming from their investments in fiber-based connectivity, according to Technology Business Research.

TBR’s latest Enterprise Operator Benchmark data shows that for the first quarter of 2017 the highest growth rate of enterprise revenue came from what it calls “strategic data.” TBR analyst Chris Antlitz said strategic data refers to access services such as Ethernet, VPN, and traditional broadband. There is a shift from legacy technologies such as copper-based DSL to next-gen fiber-based platforms, he said. This shift drove a 6.6 percent year-over-year increase in the strategic data segment of enterprise services.

Pai Backs White Spaces Broadband, If Doable

FCC chair Ajit Pai said during an FCC reauthorization hearing in the House Communications Subcommittee that if the facts warrant and the law allows it, the FCC will be aggressive about freeing up TV band white spaces for rural broadband.

Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) said rural broadband is being left behind, with slower speeds and capacity. He said there was a potential opportunity with the White Spaces proceeding and the Microsoft proposal, though he did not identify it by name.

Deploying 5G Will Cost at Least $130 Billion in Fiber, Study Says

Deploying 5G wireless speeds 10 to 100 times faster than 4G will cost $130 to $150 billion in fiber optic cabling alone over the next 5 to 7 years.

That’s according to a Deloitte study that found massive investment in fiber infrastructure will be required for the United States to reach its 5G potential.

“5G relies heavily on fiber and will likely fall far short of its potential unless the United States significantly increases its deep fiber investments,” the study reads. “Increased speed and capacity from 5G will rely on higher radio frequencies and greater network densification (i.e., increasing the number and concentration of cell sites and access points).”

To Close Digital Divide, Microsoft to Harness Unused Television Channels

The software giant plans to announce on Tuesday that it is harnessing the unused channels between television broadcasts, known as white spaces, to help get more of rural America online. In an event at the Willard Hotel in Washington, where Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated a coast-to-coast telephone call a century ago, Microsoft plans to say that it will soon start a white-spaces broadband service in 12 states including Arizona, Kansas, New York and Virginia to connect two million rural Americans in the next five years who have limited or no access to high-speed internet.

Google Fiber says microtrenching, self-installation will enhance network installation

"We've seen a big rise, just in the last few months, of people choosing just our internet-only offering, just wanting 1,000 megabits then they will choose their own over-the-top streaming services where they can personalize and package it to their viewing, their entertainment needs," said McCray, according to a UBB 2020 report. "There's a definite trend that consumers want to be able to pick and choose and package things and not be told by service providers how to do it.”

McCray added that the internet-only purchases indicate that OTT video will be the more dominant viewing mode.
